Jack Hodgy is a musician, singer, and songwriter. He has been playing guitar since the age of eight and is currently in his final year at BIMM University in Birmingham. Jack had formed a band called "The Tysms," which had been going for a little over a year. In addition to being the rhythm guitarist, songwriter, and singer in The Tysms, Jack also managed the band's finances and marketing. He dreams of becoming a full-time musician and leaving his past of working at fast-food restaurants behind.
I started my journey playing classical guitar at the age of 8 doing note work with a teacher called Linda. At that point, I was trying to figure out where I sat in the realm of music and this is where I discovered that indie-rock was the genre I felt was most suited to me. I progressed on to a rock school with a new teacher Mark, where I learnt different scales including the pentatonic scale as well as chords. Being at the rock school created the foundation of the musician I am today. I moved house and still wanted to learn more on guitar and this is where I then started lessons with another teacher called Guy. Guy had taught me different guitar licks, riffs and even more types of scales. I completed my guitar grade 5 and proceeded on in life.
I went to college at 18 in Reading at Activate Learning where I was completing my Music Performance Course Level 3. My course consisted of music recording in a studio, filming music videos and performing on stage. The first time I laid hands on a hardware synthesiser was at college and I had decided to complete my course doing synthesisers for the final project experimenting with different sounds and analysing the affect of ADSR meaning attack, delay, sustain and release.
In the mid of my musical journey, I was practicing guitar at home and playing alongside my Dad playing songs by Oasis and Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. Using the knowledge from my guitar lessons and own practice, I was able to learn the solo's on the electric guitar. Shortly down the line, my brother started lessons with my old guitar teacher Guy and was able to play guitar with my Dad and I too.
I wanted to go the extra mile after college and get a degree in Music Production and Songwriting as it is what I enjoyed most at college and felt it was the most suitable course for me so I applied to BIMM Institute, Birmingham where I was then accepted for a 3 year course.
"All of these I consider my best tracks, have I released bad shit? Yeah, sure I have but music is all about progression, emotion and feeling. I can't have been even half as good at production or songwriting as I am now when I was 12. Over the years of my life going from guitar lessons at 8, going through college and going to university I have improved in all assets of skill ranging from songwriting to performing on stage and the levels in between. What I plan on doing in future is experimenting more, taking a break from releasing to find the missing parts to my music. We can always get better at writing, we can always get better at music, you just have to find it". JH 26 x
